The year 2024 is gone and with it, we welcome 2025 traveling trends with our suitcases wide open 2025. Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo combined first-party travel data and global research for this year’s travel trends that include Detour Destinations such as Reims, France; Cozumel, Mexico; Waikato, New Zeland, as well as the Phenomena-list. Expedia’s list of Detour Destinations all experienced an increase in searches over the past year, and 63% of consumers say they are likely to visit a detour destination on their next trip*. What are Detour destinations? According to the study, “Detour Destinations are less well-known and less crowded than tourist hotspots, but these rising stars are well worth putting on an itinerary, either as an add-on or as the main destination.”

Based on the percentage increase in flight searches on Expedia from September 1, 2023, to August 31, 2024: 1.- Reims, France (detour from Paris) 2.- Brescia, Italy (detour from Milan) 3.- Cozumel, Mexico (detour from Cancun) 4.- Santa Barbara, California, USA (detour from LA) 5.- Waikato, New Zealand (detour from Auckland) 6.- Girona, Spain (detour from Barcelona) 7.- Fukuoka, Japan (detour from Tokyo) 8.- Abu Dhabi, UAE (detour from Dubai) 9.- Krabi, Thailand (detour from Phuket) 10.- Canmore, Alberta, Canada (detour from Calgary)

Another upcoming trend will be Good Getaways, a trend where keychains, kitchen magnets, and every other souvenir is left behind in the store, and exchanged for valuable experiences. “Global survey data show that 39% of travelers usually visit a grocery store and 44% shop to buy local goods they can’t get at home”. For example, coffee tours in Costa Rica, tea tastings in China, and matcha experiences in Japan are some of the most popular goods getaway experiences on Expedia. All-inclusive trips are also on the rise. According to Expedia, “Forty-one percent (41%) of Gen Zers say minimal stress is the top reason they are living in the all-inclusive era, followed by ease of booking (39%) and because it gives them a feeling of luxury (38%)”.

Set-Jetting will continue growing in 2025, which puts entertainment on screen as a source of travel inspiration. “Two-thirds of travelers shared that movies, streaming services, and TV shows have influenced their travel choices, and 36% say TV and films are more influential on their travel plans than they were last year". This time, The Real Housewives of Dubai will spark major interest in Dubai, as well as filing locations such as the UK for Bridgerton, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and Outlander-themed tours. Another big trend for 2025 is the Phenomena list, travelers moving around the globe to witness natural phenomenona in secluded, private vacation homes to see Northern Lights, Volcanoes, lava fields, and black sand beaches in Reykjavík, Iceland, Penguin Parade in Phillip Island near Melbourne, Australia and more. “Survey data revealed that the top natural phenomena travelers want to experience is seeing the Northern Lights (61%), followed by geological phenomena (30%) like volcanos, geysers, and hot springs. Additionally, 80% of travelers say it’s important that they can stay in a place that offers a prime viewing spot for these events”.
